The LDE Operator Certification Program offered by Code 540’s Lifting Device Equipment Manager offers extensive training in the operation of Mobile Aerial Platforms (MAP)), Powered Industrial Trucks (PIT), Critical and Non-Critical Rigging, and Critical and Non-Critical Overhead Crane Operator. Additional training for specific LDE is available upon request such Hoist and Winch Training, Rigger Specific Training, or Operational Training for individual LDE items with unconventional characteristics. Formal training through the GSFC LDE Program includes classroom instructions, written examination, and hands-on proficiency demonstration.

Our Goal is to provide safe conscientious and well informed Lifting Device Equipment operators to perform operations here at GSFC. Operators trained through the GSFC LDE Program will receive training in the following areas:

  • Basic requirements for a lift, and the ability to plan the lift such that it can be accomplished efficiently, safely, and in complete accordance with applicable requirements and standards.
    • OSHA
    • ANSI/ASME Standards
    • Goddard Procedural Requirements
    • NASA-STANDARD-8719.9
    • All training shall include the following:
    • NASA-specific requirements
    • GSFC-specific requirements
    • Safe rigging procedures
    • Pre-use Inspection
    • Safety and emergency procedures
    • General performance standards
    • Pre-operational checks
    • Safety-related defects and symptoms
    • Specific hazards
    • Special procedures associated with non-critical and critical lifts.
    • Use of standard hand signals and communication methods.
    • Close call and incident review
    • Lessons learned

Upon successful completion of the required training, the LDE operator is issued a certification card containing all of the LDE certifications they have successfully completed.

The GSFC LDE Training Program provides NASA employees (Contractor and Civil Servant) the availability to obtain, maintain and expand their abilities as a Lifting Device Operator.
